Implementing Standard Software Practices with WSO2

Initially, we implemented WSO2 without regard for standard software practices such as coding standards, builds, version control, and code review tools. Of course, there was a lot missing in our process. We were unable to keep track of changes and guarantee code quality. With WSO2's help, we were able to write a coding standard which we now utilize at TractorSupply Company to make sure services are written in a common, well performing way.

This session is not meant to cover the gamut of the tools and processes that are available - that would take a full conference. The intention here is to present the tools that we use as well as the problems they are intended to solve. It is always helpful to see how other people are accomplishing real world problems. This will include:

Design and Implementation of the Veridium Authenticator: A Biometric WSO2 Federated Authenticator

The Veridium Authenticator (VA) is a biometric federated authenticator available for the WSO2 Identity Server. The VA federated authenticator is IEEE 2410-2017 certified and provides biometric SSO capabilities for most iOS and Android mobile devices using facial, voice, fingerprint, and 4Fingers(tm) recognition. VA can be used with a dedicated app (available for iOS and Android in the App Store and Play Store) or embedded in existing apps using our client SDK. Veridium Authenticator provides two types of SSO experiences: QR-code and push notification.

In QR mode, the user is shown a time-sensitive QR code. The user scans the QR-code and is prompted for one or more biometric authenticators on their mobile phone. In push mode, the service provider (SP) redirection includes identity information for sending a push notification to the user's mobile phone where they are asked for biometric authentication.

In either case, successful authentication results in authorization via SAML or OIDC redirection back to the SP. The flexibile WSO2 Identity Server allows for many different biometric configurations including primary authentication, 2FA, MFA or escalated transactions.

Talk Microservices to Me: The Role of IAM in Microservice Architecture

Security by design is applicable to the microservices paradigm the same way it is applicable to any software architecture. Monolithic applications handle end user authentication and authorization in a central manner, but with microservices, each independent module has to perform necessary end user authentication and authorization along with validating service-to-service trust.

Adding to that, the granularity of these services, and frequent interactions between them makes securing microservices more challenging. Using the same approach to solve security considerations of monolithic services is not applicable.

Moreover, current authentication and authorization protocols cannot directly address these requirements, so they need the flexibility of identity and access managers to adapt to the required changes.

Hybrid Cloud API Management: API Microgateways Anywhere

On-premise only and cloud-only API management has their own perks. Complex Orchestration Made Easy

When a new project, Global Trip Record was launched at Amex GBT, they were looking for robust, scalable and fault tolerant middleware to handle all the orchestration and connectivity needs of the project.

The existing solution was monolithic and they wanted to convert that to a microservices framework. The biggest challenge was orchestration, so the new solution should be able to handle millions of service calls in a day.

IAM Essentials: Building a Secure Enterprise

Proper Identity and Access Management is the key to a secure enterprise. This is not a trivial task, and the recent trends such as Customer IAM, microservices, and IoT makes it more difficult. Making it further challenging, recent regulations such as GDPR demands strict compliance from the organizations, and doing IAM wrong might result in catastrophic consequences to the business.

For an IAM architect, there is a whole range of robust standards and novel authentication mechanisms to choose from to fulfill the organization’s requirements. Therefore, multiple aspects need to be taken into account before selecting the appropriate approach, and this includes considering the type of end-users: employees, partners and customers; the type of devices they use; type of applications they interact with; and the level of assurance those applications need. Deep-dive into Agile Architecture and Methodology

Deploying Applications in K8S and Docker

Managing Transactions in Your Microservice Architecture

Transactional behavior is a standard requirement for business applications. The microservices paradigm dictates that monolithic business applications should be broken into a collection of independently deployable services which come together to deliver the business functionality. This poses a new set of interesting challenges for microservice architects and developers. One of these challenges includes managing transactions across microservices.

In the monolithic app, all components and libraries execute within the same process so managing transactional behavior is less of a challenge. However, in the microservices world, the transaction context has to flow through across the network from service to service whenever transactional behavior is desired.

In this session, we will look at an approach developed by WSO2 to address this challenge of transaction management for microservices.

In this session Esteban shares his experience in the design and implementation of a solution aimed at managing operational efficiency in medium and small companies, based on big data systems and developed with the WSO2.

Their system generates an enriched integration ecosystem, dynamic and agile business process management, and online analytical information of customized management KPI. Together they provide information about the operational efficiency degree, allowing companies to understand, analyze, and predict the behavior of these indicators in real-time. The main virtues of their system is the flexible design given by MongoDB, the natural integration with a service-oriented architecture provided by the WSO2 Enterprise Integrator, and also a powerful online information analytics tool provided by the WSO2 Stream Processor, R programming, and Apache Kafka.

Their advice and implementation methodology give them the ability to adapt to any client need by implementing specialized connectors, dynamic configurations, and system customizations for each client without altering the performance for all clients that share resources in the same platform. In this way they lower the implementation costs and their clients pay only for the resources they use, making this technology more accessible.

Adaptive and Iterative Integration for Microservices and Cloud Native Architectures

Microservices architecture fosters building a software application as a suite of independent and autonomous services. Therefore any real world application of microservices requires the integration or composition of multiple microservices. With the proliferation of fine-grained services, integrating microservices and building inter-service communication have become the one of the most challenging tasks when implementing microservices architecture.

Unlike conventional centralized ESB based integration, microservices are integrated based on the smart-endpoints terminology, where all the smarts live at the endpoints while they are inter-connected via a dumb messaging infrastructure. However, most brown-field enterprises need to have an adaptive and iterative integration strategy when catering to their ingegration needs.

Tooling for Observability

Nowadays, observability has become a hot topic in the software industry. Observability, a term that comes from control theory, is a measure of how well internal states of a system can be inferred from knowledge of its external outputs.

There are many monitoring tools which let you know whether a system is functioning as expected. However, with observability, we can find an answer to the question of why a system is not functioning the way you want. In this sense, monitoring is just a subset of observability. Instrumentation also plays a principal role in making your system observable. For instance, the use of logging in systems (especially structured logging), collecting metrics in the runtime such as request count and response time, and the use of unique IDs for requests in order to do distributed tracing, are vital instrumentation techniques for observability. As a matter of fact, logging, monitoring and distributed tracing are considered as the three main ways to provide the observability in a system.

This session will focus on the observability of WSO2 products, the tools for observability and how WSO2 will make its next generation products observable by default using well-known standards like OpenTracing specification.

By leveraging strong backgrounds in software development and systems administration practices, the EagleTG team was able to create an agile process for capturing product configuration nuances, apply them to the new WUM-updated WSO2 product instances, then deploy them into these multiple isolated environments.

In this session, Neil will explore their ‘deployer build’ process, which allows them to deliver a fully configured stack of components that development teams can use in isolated environments as well as promote to staging and production environments.
